Update: Monday, July 24 2007 pet food recall.

Details on Natural Balance Eatables for Dogs Clostridium botulinum canned food recall.

AKA Castleberry's Food Company

Outbreak of Botulism Associated with Canned Chili

Foodborne botulism is a rare but serious paralytic illness caused by consuming foods that contain botulinum toxin, a nerve toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While botulism can affect some pets, dogs and cats are inherently resistant. The disease has only been seen occasionally in dogs and has not been reported in cats. Ferrets are highly susceptible to botulinum toxin. The incubation period can be two hours to two weeks; in most cases, the symptoms appear after 12 to 24 hours.

Botulism is characterized by progressive motor paralysis. Typical clinical signs may include muscle paralysis, difficulty breathing, chewing and swallowing, visual disturbances and generalized weakness may also occur. Death usually results from paralysis of the respiratory or cardiac muscles.

Pet owners who have used these products and whose pets have these symptoms should contact their veterinarian immediately.

Due to possible contamination with botulinum toxin, CDC, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) are advising persons not to eat certain canned food products manufactured by Castleberry's Food Company. These include certain Castleberry's brands as well as products distributed under other brand names. The recall includes some canned dog food.

May 04, 2007 - melamine and cyanuric acid may be causing "food-induced nephrotoxicosis"

A chemical reaction between melamine and cyanuric acid is suspected of forming crystals and blocking kidney function. Crystals found in the kidneys of affected animals are approximately 70 percent cyanuric acid and 30 percent melamine, and are extremely insoluble. When melamine and cyanuric acid is mixed in samples of cat urine researchers found immediate formation of crystals that were identical to crystals found in the kidneys of affected animals. Two other melamine- related substances—ammelide and ammeline—may also play roles and are under investigation.

Is any pet food safe?
Yes, while everyone is saddened for the animals affected, there are millions of animals that have been eating commercially prepared food. Remember less than 2% of all pet food was affected by this recall. That means 98% of all pet food was safe. Chinese sourced wheat gluten is the common thread through this whole issue. The FDA is currently testing 100 percent of wheat gluten, rice protein concentrate, corn gluten, corn meal, soy protein, and rice bran being imported from China for these contaminants. Read the label of your pet food and do not feed any food that contains wheat gluten.

Should I cook people food for my pet?
As a veterinarian let me tell you what concerns me about that. Our pets have highly specific nutritional needs and it would be difficult if not impossible for the average pet owners to produce at home a truly well balance and complete diet for their pet. Let me give you one example: Taurine is an essential amino acid in cats to prevent heart problems and blindness – that would not be found in the right amounts in most home cooked pet foods.

Secondly, many common human foods like onions, grapes and raisins, garlic, chocolate can cause medical problems like anemia or kidney failure. So for most people it is just too difficult to make balanced home cooked pet food. And very few people I know have the time to properly attempt to make and store home cooked pet food diets.

Many recipes found on the web or elsewhere, even from well-meaning sources, may not be complete and balanced, creating the possibility of significant long-term harm to animals fed diets based onthese recipes. Advice on home formulation from a professional with sufficient training in the science ofdog and cat nutrition is highly prudent. Web sites such as www.BalanceIT.com and www.PetDIETS.com may be helpful in that regard.

April 12, 2007 -- AAVLD Pet Food Toxicity Survey now available!

We are able to submit samples & report cases related to adulterated pet food.

We now have a name "food-induced nephrotoxicosis" and veterinary laboratory diagnosticians are standing by to distinguish true cases of nephropathy unique to the pet food recall. To find out if your pet should be tested contact your veterinarian. As always, we are hear to help you as a member of your pet's healthcare team.

If you are concerned about your pet, please call us at the Seminole Animal Hospital at 407-330-7387.

                                                       -----------------------------------------

We have been monitoring our computerized records at Seminole Animal Hospital and we have not sold any of the affected lot numbers.

The good news is Veterinarians diagnose and treat kidney disease everyday. Many other things including ingestion of Easter lilies, raisins, grapes, garbage, molds, and antifreeze can cause the same signs of lethargy, lack of appetite and vomiting in association with kidney failure. Sick pets generally are responding well to therapy if the owners quickly bring them to their vets for treatment.

ALSO, it is very important that pet owners keep samples of the food for testing.

My pet has eaten the food that has been recalled. How do I know my pet is sick?
Signs of illness include loss of appetite, lethargy, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, sudden changes in water consumption, or changes in the frequency or amount of urination.

These signs may also occur with other illnesses. Any animal showing these signs should be examined by a veterinarian, even if the animal has not eaten any of the recalled pet food. Please call us at 407-330-7387 to schedule an appointment.

My pet is showing signs of illness. What do I do?
Have your pet examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Pet Food Recall
Update: Tuesday Sept 16 2008

Pet food produced in Everson, Pennsylvania from February 18, 2008 until July 29, 2008 is being recalled. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers. Pedigree Large Breed Adult and Pedigree Small Crunch Bites are two of the brands that may be affected.
