PARVO SCARE HITS LOCAL DOG PARK
Parvo, a killer virus, has forced the closure of a local dog park. Please make sure your pet has the proper vaccinations.

February 12, 2009--Sanford, FL

Dr. Wesley Borgman owner of the Seminole Animal Hospital in Sanford, FL was interviewed by Fox 35 regarding the recent closure of a dog park in Orlando. Downy Park was closed by Orange County Parks and Recreation after a dog infected with the deadly Parvovirus was found playing there on Wednesday. Animal control removed the dog from the premises and test results showed it was positive for the parvovirus. The park staff bleached the area and closed the park until Thursday, Feb. 19.

Dr. Borgman discusses details about this deadly disease on Fox 35 tonight at 10pm. We will post the clip as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, please make sure your pet's vaccines for parvo are up to date. Call our office (407-330-7387) if you are a client and are unsure if your pet is up to date. Below are a few important points about parvo.

  • Canine Parvovirus is a serious, often deadly disease of dogs. Parvo causes severe vomiting and diarrhea and can be especially devastating to puppies.

  • Canine Parvovirus arrived in the US in the late 1970s causing great concern among dog breeders, dog showers, veterinarians and all pet owners. Fortunately, development of effective vaccines helped check the spread of parvo.

  • Today, parvo is still a concern among specific breeds of dogs (Rottweilers, Dobermans, pit bulls), any young dogs, and any dogs who don’t receive routine veterinary care (unvaccinated pets).

  • It is highly contagious.

  • All research to date shows that dogs who have been vaccinated with current vaccines are still protected against various strains of parvo.

  • Canine parvovirus is a disease that dog owners should take seriously. Follow your veterinarian’s vaccination guidelines to help protect your pet.
